Brutal Rape of Teen Outrages Nation Plagued by Sex Crimes

Johannesburg, South Africa  –  In a country where 1 in 4 women is raped, some months-old babies, to a 94 year-old grandmother are  assaulted with their assailants feeling no threat for their actions.  However, one particular assault on a 17 year-old girl proved to be a rallying cry from citizens demanding action.  The teenager was gang-raped, had her stomach sliced open, then left for dead on a construction site.

The girl lived long enough to identify one of her attackers, a 22 year-old man.  Police arrested him and a second suspect aged 21.  Authorities promised more arrests soon.

“Kill them” was one of the demands voiced on talk radio stations.  Every few months, this nation with the highest rate of rape of babies and young girls in the world, yells its outrage at a particularly brutal attack.  Last year, South Africans were shocked when village boys gang-raped a mentally ill 17 year-old girl.

The young girl, with a mental age of four, was attacked by six boys, the youngest 10 years-old.  The only reason the crime came to light was the boys made a cell phone video and posted it on the internet.  The article said the video went viral.

Professor Rachel Jewkes, a doctor heading the Women’s Research Unit of South Africa’s Medical Research Council, said 37 percent of surveyed men in South Africa’s most populated province of Gauteng said they had raped a child or a woman, according to the survey.  Seventy-five percent of them first raped a teenager.  “It is a social disaster” said Dr. Jewkes.

Dr. Jewkes further said, “Men who try to feel better about their past by trying to make out that what they did was not serious or was not rape is obviously huge and must be a huge obstacle to getting anything done from police making arrests to decisions in the courtroom by magistrates and so forth.”  The public outcry, of this latest rape/murder in Bredasdorp, a Western Cape town, more know for its giant protea flowers, has led President Jacob Zuma to pledge “his government would never rest until the perpetrators and all those who rape and abuse children and woman are meted with the maximum justice the law allows.”  The maximum sentence for rape in South Africa is life in prison, the death penalty has been abolished.

Zuma himself was accused of rape, by the HIV-positive lesbian daughter of a close friend, in 2005.  Zuma said the sex was consensual and he was acquitted.  Although his comments in court, “That he had to take a shower afterward to cut the risk of acquiring AIDS,” will follow him to his grave.

In a study conducted by Dr. Jewkes in 2009, 62 percent of surveyed boys, over the age of 11 years-old, said they believed that forcing someone to have sex was not an act of violence.  One-third said girls enjoy being raped.

Normally, I do not read articles on rape, but this article had a light skinned woman with “No means No!” written across the bare top of her back.  The caption bellow the picture read “A woman marches in an event in Cape Town in 2011 demanding an end to violence against woman.”  The picture, the words on the woman’s back, caught my eye.

As a brand new Alameda County deputy sheriff, my first duty assignment was working in jail.  I was assigned to our maximum security facility named Greystone.  Greystone was a two-story building.

Inmates on the first floor, generally two inmates per 7’X7′ cell.  Each cell was made of solid concrete, with a thick solid wood door, with a porthole.  The ceiling of the cell was 3″ squares of heavy gauged wire, thick enough to support the weight of many grown men standing on it.  On top of the wire were walkways called catwalks, made of three 2″X12″ planks which allowed a deputy to observe the inmates from above.

The deputy working on the catwalk was simply called “Catwalk” by deputies and inmate alike.  I spent the first four years of my career working in Greystone.  First on Midnights, then Swings, then finally Day shift for the last two years.

Greystone was divided in half by a messhall in the center of the building, thus creating East and West Greystone.  Originally, all inmates were lumped together on both sides, but after a judge’s order, East Greystone mostly housed unsentenced inmates, one to a cell.  Inmates, on either side, were classified as White or Black Mainline, Protective Custody (PC), Special PC, Mentally Unstable, and Administrative Segregation (Ad Seg).

Each side had a dorm, called H-Dorm, where our trustees/inmate workers were housed.  There was much more to Greystone, but I wanted to give you a basic layout of the facility, because it ties into the preceding story.  You can learn a lot about crime and the people that commit just by listening to them.

Many inmates would tell you about their crimes, some even bragging about what the committed.  The majority of the East side were incarcerated for murder, rape, child abuse, basically the most heinous crimes man can commit.  I was walking on the catwalk one morning, on the East side, when I heard two inmates hollering over the wire.

One inmate, known to me as a rapists, was telling the inmate in the next cell his “Technique” for raping his victims.  He excitedly boasted “I would fuck the bitch, then fuck her in the ass, then have her suck my dick clean because she was the one who got it dirty.”  That was almost 30 years ago, I remember it as if it was yesterday.

As horrific as it was to hear this bragging, could you imagine the torture, the thoughts this woman felt during her assault, an attack that perhaps still haunts her.  How do you recover from such a horrendous, dire chain of brutality.  What could you possibly say or do to avenge the animalistic attack this woman was subjected to, I have no idea.

As far as I know, man is the only animal that has the ability to harbor and unleash such violence towards another human being.  I remember seeing this rapists when I was down on the floor, he was a white male, 5′-9″, 240 pounds with dirty, oily, unkept blond hair.  A real pig of a human being.

I spoke with his lawyer, when she came to see him about his case.  I asked her what time he was looking at, she replied, if he pleads out, three years in State Prison.  With good time/work time, he would do 18 months, then paroled.

His time in county jail would apply to his prison term.  Just does not seem fair, 18 months confinement for destroying a person, ruining a life, it just does not seem right! The last sentence in the last paragraph of the South African rape story quoted a young boy saying “Girls like to be raped.”

Unbelievable, just unbelievable.  Over the course of my career, I have had contact with hundreds, perhaps over a thousand bad guys.  I saw one murderer, he shot and killed his estranged wife, remorseful.

Generally, if any sorrow is shown it is solely self-serving.  To many criminals, it is their chosen vocation.  They get up, commit crimes, get caught, go to jail and/or prison.

Some are just more despicable, heinous monsters than others.  To control, force, humiliate another human being, to expose a person to potential STD’s, HIV, full-blown AIDS is cruelty beyond belief.  You want the attack to stop, you pray for the attack to stop, you beg for the attack to stop, but when the assault stops, will you be set free or murdered?
